What is the “Painting Per Week”?

To put it simply, the “Painting Per Week” is a challenge I created for myself to get better at oil painting.

Historically, my primary medium of choice involved pencils, gouache, and acrylics, but I had only recently dove into the oil medium somewhere around 2022-2023. While I had fallen in love with the medium, it was much different than what I had practiced with before. During some dark evening in the fall of 2023, a personal goal was born out of my desire to improve my oil painting skills; I would create one 6”x6” oil painting on board per week for the year of 2024. That was it. I didn’t particularly care if the painting was objectively “good”, I just wanted to paint a total of 52 small paintings by the years end. As I painted, I decided that each painting in the series would be painted from life, memory, or a photograph of my own experiences.

Well, 104 paintings later, 2024 came to an end. I had met my goal (and then some), my skills and love for the medium had grown, and I felt an immense personal satisfaction that I had set an artistic goal and met it.

I have continued my practice of “painting per week” in 2025 and in 2026. The paintings from 2024 and 2025 have been (amaturely) photographed and are uploaded on my website; you can view them by clicking on the links below.
